What is ceramics?

Ceramics is a fun, safe and easy hobby for the entire family.  In ceramics, we create with clay.  The building techniques include hand building, throwing on a wheel or using molds to cast pieces.  Most ceramic shops and studios will concentrate in one or more of these areas to create a piece.  Once the piece is created, it is fired in a kiln to make it a durable and usable item.  Finally, there are a variety of techniques used to decorate the pieces.  The pieces can vary from utility to purely decorative.  This is what makes this hobby so exciting.  The combinations of building techniques and decorating techniques means you will never run out of possibilities.

How do I find a studio in my area?

To find a studio in your area, simply click on the “Studios” button on the left hand of the screen.  All of the studios in CeramicsNetwork.com are organized by state and city.    If you don’t find a shop in our Network in your area, don’t give up.  Check your local listings for a studio in your area.

I want to visit a studio, what can I expect?

Studio owners and operators are some of the nicest people we know.  You can expect to find a friendly smile and someone that is anxious to bring more people into the ceramics hobby.  More often than not, you will find that the person behind the counter at a ceramic studio is also the owner.  Most are family owned and operated.

What can I do to ensure that I have a good time at a ceramic studio?

There are some things you can do to ensure that you have an exceptional time at a studio.  Remember to be careful.  Although clay, once fired, is very durable, it is breakable.  If it is in the green ware stage (before being fired), it is very fragile.  Also, make sure and wash your hands before you touch any pieces.  Oils in our hands can cause some issues later.  Lastly, ask and follow any studio rules.  Rules are put in place to make sure everyone is safe and has a great time!!

How do I buy a piece once I have found it?

Once you have found a piece you want on CeramicsNetwork.com, there are two options.  Preferably, you have found a shop on the Network that has the mold.  To contact the shop, check out their contact information in the “Studios” page.  You can email, phone or fax many of the shops in our Network.  Many studios will also have their pricing information on the site.  If there is no shop on the Network, you may be able to order the mold or piece from a distributor or the mold company.  Click on the Mold Company information.  Note:  Many molds have been discontinued and can no longer be ordered from the mold company or distributor.
